1963年，根据巴金小说《团圆》改编的电影《英雄儿女》上映，成为那个年代最有影响力的作品之一。
《英雄儿女》是一部多主角的影片。抗美援朝期间，志愿军某师政委王文清在战场上，遇到了老朋友王复标的儿子王成，从而获悉失散多年的女儿王芳也在这里；前方战斗十分激烈，王成经过再三请求，终于得上最前沿无名高地。最后时刻，他抱起爆破筒，冲入敌群，英勇牺牲；文工团员王芳被委以重任：宣传哥哥的英雄事迹，穿行阵地的她与生父王文清的相认一波三折……
文革当中，国产故事片均遭厄运，《英雄儿女》却死里逃生，在只有样板戏高亢激昂的年代，这部电影的插曲显得格外抒情，格外动听；在物质生活相对贫乏的六七十年代，《英雄儿女》的传奇故事，在无数个寒冷的夜晚，充实和丰富着中国人的精神世界。
