劇情介紹
無知的人類，往往災難性事件的始作俑者……一場大面積的病毒突然爆發，傳播速度之快幾乎無人能夠阻止，沒有人知道可怕的病毒之源開始於何處，只知道它是沒辦法停止的、不可逆轉的、無法治癒的，最重要的是，它是人為創造出來的。
羅伯特·奈維爾是紐約市一個才華橫溢的病原體學者，為美國軍方服務。他作為政府投資研究抵抗流行性疾病的疫苗的先頭部隊，看著病毒在街道上如此肆虐，卻也只有無能為力的份兒。這種通過空氣就能傳播的病毒最終以一種難以抵禦速度籠罩了整個城市，使得總統只能下令封鎖紐約市，未被感染的人才能出城。可想而知，這種做法造成了市民的極大恐慌，紐約城頓時亂作一團。羅伯特在焦急之中將妻子佐伊和7歲的女兒馬莉送上出城的軍車，卻目睹他們死在面前的慘劇……這種時候，死亡也許是最好的選擇，因為那些被感染卻沒有死的人，身體發生了異變，成為一種可怕的生物，不再存在任何理智的思考，行屍走肉般地居住在城市地下的黑暗和陰影當中，躲避著陽光--他們對新鮮的血與肉，有著最為原始的渴望。
這場災難所導致的後果，就是紐約變成了一座死城，而羅伯特就成了這里僅存的一個人類--不知何故，他的血液對這種病毒有著天生的免疫能力。羅伯特知道自己可以支配兩種武器，那就是他在科學上的專業知識和自己的血液。曾經在軍隊里討生活的經歷，幫助他選擇了在這座被廢棄的城市中生活的方式，完全是高度系統化的，他每天都要堅持大量的體能訓練，還要不間斷地發出求救或尋找和自己一樣的倖存者的無線電波……羅伯特是一個非常自律的人，否則在這種極端孤獨的情況下，正常人都有可能發瘋。惟一還在與羅伯特並肩作戰的，就是他最為忠誠的夥伴薩姆，一隻德國牧羊犬。白天，羅伯特帶著薩姆外出尋找維持生命的供給，然後去實驗室時做研究、發無線電波；到了晚上，他們把自己關在一個堅固得有如堡壘的建築物中，觀察那些怪物在城市的街頭「覓食」。除了每天盡責盡職地做同樣的事情，羅伯特在這座「空城」當中也享受到了完全的自由：他可以駕駛著他的跑車在街道上橫沖直撞；在戰斗機上打高爾夫；用無價的珠寶裝飾他的堡壘等等，就連市中心最繁忙的商業街，如今也變成了羅伯特自家的「後花園」。作為人類最後的希望，羅伯特被惟一的一個殘留下來的任務驅使著，那就是使用自己血液中的免疫系統，尋找逆轉病毒的方法。雖然他知道自己面對的是一個龐大的天文數字，但是他沒得選擇，因為他的時間就快用光了。
