然而，老伴的去世讓原本不善言的卡爾變得性格怪僻，更加的沉默寡言起來。這時候，政府計劃要在卡爾所住的地方重新建造，而卡爾不願意離開擁有和妻子美好記憶的屋子。
正當政府打算將他送到養老院時，他決定實現他和他妻子畢生的願望。不過，他並不是打算一個人去，而是和他的屋子一起去，因為卡爾在屋頂上繫上成千上萬個五顏六色的氫氣球。
