1963年，根據巴金小說《團圓》改編的電影《英雄兒女》上映，成為那個年代最有影響力的作品之一。
《英雄兒女》是一部多主角的影片。抗美援朝期間，志願軍某師政委王文清在戰場上，遇到了老朋友王復標的兒子王成，從而獲悉失散多年的女兒王芳也在這里；前方戰斗十分激烈，王成經過再三請求，終於得上最前沿無名高地。最後時刻，他抱起爆破筒，沖入敵群，英勇犧牲；文工團員王芳被委以重任：宣傳哥哥的英雄事跡，穿行陣地的她與生父王文清的相認一波三折……
文革當中，國產故事片均遭厄運，《英雄兒女》卻死裡逃生，在只有樣板戲高亢激昂的年代，這部電影的插曲顯得格外抒情，格外動聽；在物質生活相對貧乏的六七十年代，《英雄兒女》的傳奇故事，在無數個寒冷的夜晚，充實和豐富著中國人的精神世界。
