While visiting the Earth at Night, a group of alien botanists is discovered and disturbed by an approaching human task force. Because of the more than hasty take-off, one of the visitorsisleft behind. The little alien finds himself all alone on a very strange planet.Fortunately, the extra-terrestrial soon finds a friend and emotional companion in 10-year-old Elliot, who discovered him looking for food in his family's garden shed. While E.T.slowly gets acquainted with Elliot's brother Michael, his sister Gertie as well as with Earthcustoms, members of the task force work day and night to track down the whereaboutsof Earth's first visitor from Outer Space. The wish to go home again is strong in E.T., and afterbeing able to communicate with Elliot and the others, E.T. starts building an improvised device to send a message home for his folks to come and pick him up. But before long, E.T.gets seriously sick, and because of his special connection to Elliot, the young boy suffers, too. The situation gets critical when the task force finally intervenes. By then, all help may already be too late, and there's no alien spaceship in sight.
E.T.: E.T. phone home.
Michael: Maybe he's not that smart. Maybe he's like a worker bee who only knows how to push
buttons or something.
Michael: Okay, I just hope we don't wake up on Mars or something surrounded by millions of little squashy guys. Elliott: I'm keeping him.
Elliot: Yeah, he came back, but he's not a goblin. He's a spaceman.
Elliot: You could be happy here, I could take care of you. I wouldn't let anybody hurt you. We
could grow up together, E.T.
Keys: Elliot, he came to me too. I've been wishing for this since I was 10 years old, I don't want him to die. What can we do that we're not already doing?
Elliot: He needs to go home; he's calling his people. And I don't know where they are, but he needs to go home.
Keys: Elliot, I don't think he was left here intentionally, but his being here is a miracle, Elliot. It's a
miracle and you did the best that anybody could do. I'm glad he met you first.
Michael: [imitating Elliot] I found him, he belongs to me!
Elliot: You must be dead, because I don't know how to feel. I can't feel anything anymore.

All that city. You just couldn』t see the end to it. The end? Please? You please just show me where it ends? It was all very fine on that gangway. And I was grand too, in my overcoat. I cut quite a figure. And I was getting off. Guaranteed. There was no problem. It wasn』t what I saw that stopped me, Max. It was what I didn』t see. You understand that? What I didn』t see. In all that sprawling city there was everything except an end. There was no end. What I did not see was where the whole thing came to an end. The end of the world...
Take a piano. The keys begin, the keys end. You know there are eighty-eight of them, nobody can tell you any different. They are not infinite. You are infinite. And on these keys the music that you can make is infinite. I like that. That I can live by.
You get me up on that gangway and you』re rolling out in front of me a keyboard of millions of keys, millions and billions of keys that never end, and that』s the truth, Max. That they never end. That keyboard is infinite. And if that keyboard is infinite, then on that keyboard there is no music you can play. You』re sitting on the wrong bench. That』s God』s piano.
Christ! Did, did you see the streets? Just the streets… There were thousands of them! And how do you do it down there? How do you choose just one? One woman, one house, one piece of land to call your own, one landscape to look at, one way to die...
All that world is weighing down on me, you don』t even know where it comes to an end, and aren』t you ever just scared of breaking apart at the thought of it? The enormity of living it?
I was born on this ship, and the world passed me by, but two thousand people at a time. And there were wishes here, but never more than fit between prow and stern. You played out your happiness, but on a piano that was not infinite. I learned to live that way.
Land? Land is a ship too big for me. It』s a woman too beautiful; it』s a voyage too long, a perfume too strong. It』s a music I don』t know how to make. I could never get off this ship. At best, I can step off my life. After all, I don』t exist for anyone. You』re an exception, Max, you』re the only one who knows I』m here. You』re a minority, and you better get used to it. Forgive me, my friend, but I』m not getting off.
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper
——T·S·Eliot

Max: I still asked myself if I did the right thing when I abandoned the floating city. I don't mean only for the work. The fact is a friend like that, a real friend… We won't meet one again.
If you decide to hang up your sea legs, if you just want to feel something more solid beneath your feet, and then you no longer hear the music of God's around you.
But, like he used to say, "you never really died off , as long as you got good story and someone to tell to."
Henn, the trouble is nobody believe a single word of my story.
Max: It happened every time, someone would look up and see her. It's difficult to understand, maybe more than a thousand of us on that ship, traveling rich folks, immigrants and strange people and us, there's always one, one guy alone, who will see her first.
Maybe he was just sitting there eating, or walking on the deck, maybe he was just fixing his pants. He looked up for a second, a quick glance out of the scene, and he'd see her. Then he just stand there, his heart beat raising. Every time ! Every damn time! I swear!
He turned to us. He turns to the ship, turns to everybody and scream ---- "AMERICA!"
Max: The one who sees America first is the one on every ship. And don't be thinking that's an accident or some optical delusion. It's destiny!
Those people who always have that precise, instant stabed on their life. And they were kids.
You can look into their eyes. If you look carefully enough, there's a goddess there--America.
Max; And I see a few Americas, six years on that ship, five across the year.Europe and America and back. Always on the ocean.
When you stand on the land, you could even pee straight in a jar. It was steady, the jar I mean. But you keep bob like an idiot,or you can get off the ship all right.
But off the ocean… </CC>
